I loved this year’s Academy Awards red carpet.
The gowns were unique and some a little bit weird and definitely worth talking about. For my favorite set of looks, it was the women in white who stole the show. Lupita Nyong'o stunned in a pearl embellished Calvin Klein (although I really wish the neckline was just a simple deep v with no key hole). Faith Hill looked sleek and sophisticated in this straight off the runway J. Mendel gown. And one of my absolute favorite looks of the night was Jenna Dewan (also known as Mrs. Tatum) in Zuhair Murad couture, although why would she not have included this incredible cape from the runway show?
So who did I think could have done better? Read below.
Julianne Moore in Chanel: I think this was one of those dresses that probably looked better in real life than in photos. And I completely get wanting to wear Chanel on the night you win your first Oscar. I mean I get it, it’s Chanel. And when Karl decides he’d like to make you a custom dress, you accept. But I just wasn't loving this on her. It was s a little shapeless and not as much of a fashion risk as I like to see from her. Personally, I think she would have shinned like the winner she is in this emerald shimmering Zac Posen number.
Emma Stone in Elie Saab: As always, Emma looked incredible. Super elegant and I liked that she chose a bold color choice but I felt like the dress aged her a bit. Honestly I keep going back and forth between “it’s perfect” and she should have gone for something more fresh and fun. If she wanted to stick with Elie Saab, I would have loved to see her in this couture gown from the Spring/Summer 2015 collection. Maybe the feather skirt would have overwhelmed her. Maybe the color would have washed her out. I don’t know. All I know is that it was one of my favorite dresses from the couture collection and someone should have worn it to the Oscars.
Nicole Kidman in Louis Vuitton: This was one of my least favorite looks of the night. I hated the color of the dress. I hated the choice of clutch. And I hated that red belt on this particular dress. Nicole is this statuesque beauty and if she wanted something fitted and shimmery, I think this Naeem Khan gown would have been a million times better (but honestly, pretty much anything would have been a million times better).
Jessica Chastain in Givenchy: This was not one of my favorite looks from Jessica. Although her body looked incredible and I loved the navy color with her red hair, I just think it was a little dated. I don’t know if it was the cowl neck or the sequin square neck bodice or the shoes (which you can’t see in this photo), but it just wasn’t working for me. I think she would have been so gorgeous in something totally modern and on-trend like this Balmain caped pant suit (hello, it's a caped. pantsuit.).
Dakota Johnson in Saint Laurent: Normally I am a huge fan of sleek, simple, and red and it’s not that I didn’t like this dress, I just wanted something more from Dakota. She’s relatively new to the red carpet scene and this was her chance to make a real fashion statement. Maybe this is too close to Lupita’s red Ralph Lauren dress, but this Emanuel Ungaro gown is modern, sexy, and screams “I have arrived.” Plus who doesn’t love a good cape dress?
Kerry Washington in Miu Miu: Kerry said she liked her gown because it was simple and easy. And that’s what it was. Simple and easy. But she’s one of my favorite red carpet risk takers, so this look was disappointing. I think something with a little more detail and a little more depth would have been a better choice. I had a hard time choosing which dress I would have picked between the Zuhair Murad Haute Couture dress or this light blue Elie Saab. Which would you like to see Kerry in?
Who were your best dressed picks? Who could have stepped it up a notch?
