Last night were the 72nd Golden Globes, kicking off the start of this year’s award show season, and giving us months of water cooler arguments on who rocked the red carpet and who totally bombed.
I'm not one to shame anyone as the "worst dressed" (after all fashion is subjective), but that doesn't mean I'm not still super opinionated when it comes to who wore what on the red carpet. Isn't that half (ok, all) the reason we stay up til midnight on a Sunday night?
So instead of "worst dressed", these are my "I expect better from you" picks. None of these women looked bad, I just think they all could have made better fashion choices.
Kate Hudson is hot. Versace is hot. It's all hot. Too much hot. The plunging neckline and the crystal embellished side slits and the severe hair and makeup is just too much for me. We get it, you're hot! To me, Kate Hudson epitomizes the "less is more" ideal of beauty. I would have loved to see her in something a little more relaxed (and covered), like this ah-mazing all white jumpsuit from the Elie Saab Spring/Summer 2015 collection.
Kerry Washington is usually one of my favorite red carpet picks. In a sea of traditional gowns, she usually favors colorful, high fashion ensembles, which I obviously love. But this time, her Mary Katrantzou gown just fell short - literally. It's not just the length, but the color blocking, the material, and the choice of shoes all left me a little confused. I'm all about a risky and nontraditional choice on the red carpet, but I think something like this one shouldered, structural Monique Lhuillier gown from the Spring 2015 collection would have been stunning on Kerry.
I think I might be in the minority here for this Jessica Chastain Versace gown. It's not that she didn't look sexy. She's like a freakin' real life Jessica Rabbit - she's sexy. But to me, it just looked a little dated and well...cheap. The heavy make up and overtly sexy bronze lamé dress might have worked on someone else, but I'm not a fan. I would have preferred something a little more romantic like this lace Reem Acra Pre-Fall 2015 gown to show off her incredible body and push her outside of her fashion comfort zone.
Surprise, surprise, Keira Knightley showed up in Chanel. I get it. She's the face of the brand, so it's totally expected she'll wear something from the latest collection. And I feel like this is sacrilege to say (because it's Chanel), but I hate it (fashion gods, please spare me). Between the ruffled lapel, butterfly appliqués, and tiered bottom, it’s all too much. Personally, I would have gone for vintage Chanel. But hell, if you’re committed to sticking with the same pre-fall 2015 collection then this black tiered number would have been a much better choice.
So after all my disappointments, who did I like? Here are my "best dressed" picks for the night.
Emma Stone in Lanvin. I’m a huge fan of what Emma brings to the red carpet. She always shows up in something fresh, fun, and fashion forward. Although her outfit will most likely be divisive on the best/worst dressed lists, to me, this jumpsuit is sleek, memorable, and pushes the red carpet boundaries. Total winner in my book.
Chrissy Teigen in Zuhair Murad. I love the intricate pattern in this gown. It elevates a long sleeve, monochromatic dress from something basic into something spectacular. The dress is sheer, lacy, and embellished, but still manages to stay sleek and sexy.
Lupita Nyong'o in Giambattista Valli Couture. I don't think I am alone in saying Lupita is one of the most anticipated red carpet attendees. Last year she killed it during awards season and I expect her reign to continue this season. Last night she looked phenomenal. The dress was feminine, ethereal, and bold and when she walked she looked like she was floating on a cloud of delicate flower petals.
Sienna Miller in Miu Miu. Honestly, I'm not sure this dress would have worked on most, but Sienna was radiant. The neckline was plunging, but unlike some of the other low cut gowns (*cough, cough* Kate Hudson), this one didn't distract from the details of the dress. The hair (which has me seriously considering going short again), the makeup, and the dress just all worked.
